Grow Your Business with Instagram

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking application that allows its users to capture pictures and videos, and share them publicly, or privately, on the app, as well as through a variety of other social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. Instagram users are given the option to edit their photos within the app, add filters to change the look of their photos and videos, and hashtag their posts to gain exposure. The application currently has over 800 million active monthly users, who post approximately 52 million photos per day. Say, “Cheese!”

As you can guess by looking at the figures above, Instagram is a great way to gain exposure for your business, online. Because the user numbers are so high, you can expect your target audience to be using the application. And, because Facebook owns Instagram, you are able to integrate advertising between your two accounts.

Here are 5 ways to build your business’ online presence, when using Instagram:

  1. Have a good balance between fun pictures/videos and promotional pictures/videos.

Instead of constantly filling your followers’ feeds with promotional material telling them to buy your products or services, show them your fun side. Take advantage of the opportunity you have to reach an audience and post a funny video clip or image to create a personality for your page that will keep your follows list growing. You can also track the engagement with your posts to see what your followers like best. We will talk more about that in #5.

  1. Post interesting videos that will get lots of exposure.

Instagram recently updated their video feature to allow users to post 60-second videos, instead of just 15-second videos. Take advantage of the time you have here and post something that will draw a crowd to your page. Users are able to put filters on videos, share their videos to other social media platforms, use geotagging and a photo map to engage with their audience. Click here to learn more about photo maps:

  1. Embed your Instagram posts into your blogs and websites to increase exposure.

Increasing the opportunity for someone to see your posts will help you gain followers and other account activity. It can also help you create a consistent brand identity throughout all of your social media platforms, simply by sharing your Instagram posts to your other accounts.

  1. Market your brand by taking advantage of trending topics.

Whether it's a trending hashtag or challenge, take advantage of the opportunity to gain exposure by getting involved with daily trends. Many people pay attention to trending topics, which makes for a great opportunity to gain large amounts of exposure, quickly. Putting yourself in the mix by using a trending hashtag, or participating in a trending challenge, can expose you to a much larger group of Instagram users than you normally reach.

  1. Use image analytics to see how your Instagram account is influencing the market.

Just like you would with a Facebook post, or tweet, using analytics can be a great way to see what does and does not work for your intended audience. Blitzmetrics ( and Curalate ( are great sources for image analytics that will help you decide what day of the week is best to post, and what time of day will get you the most traffic to your account.
